Medical Information

My original plan (June 2009) was to run a marathon, every day, for a year. After discussions my family doctor, Team Kids-U-CAN captain Tom and wife, Sue, it was decided to run five days a week followed by two recovery days. My family doctor suggested regular check ups in order to monitor my overall state of health

Recommendations

Blood tests and urinalysis should be carried out on a regular basis during "Marathon Quest 250". Parameters of Martin's health including muscle damage, hydration status, inflammation and immune function should be reviewed.

Muscle damage

  • Creatine phosphokinase (CPK): an enzyme found principally inside muscle cells that leak into the bloodstream when cells are damaged.

Hydration status

  • Percentage of red blood cells to total blood volume (hematocrit)
  • Red blood cell counts per litre (red cell density)
  • Concentration of hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying protein in our blood)

Inflammation

  • Inflammatory marker: interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a cytokine that links inflammation with heart disease.

Immune Function

  • Bone marrow red cell production

University of Calgary: Dept. of Kinesiology

The Dept. of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary will be contacted to see if they would like to carry out additional monitoring of Martin before, during and after the "Marathon Quest 250"
