I love playing hockey. I arrived in Canada in 1977 and lived in Kimberley, BC the Bavarian City in the Rockies. I had only skated a few times in the rinks in England, but was invited by some of my work buddies, at the Sullivan mine, to come out for a rec hockey team. The first session I had bruises on both hips the size of dinner plates but I kept plugging away. Soon I was able to skate forward AND backwards. In 1979 I moved to Yellowknife, NWT and joined The Dusters, a group of teachers who played in the local league. I really couldn't skate that well, but my years playing indoor soccer helped my positional play. My next move was to Sudbury Ontario where I played for the Black Knights. The hightlight of my hockey career was when I got 50 goals in one session. My hockey career is now over.
Today, I ran with a bunch of young lads from the Cochrane Rockies Junior Hockey team. We did 4km and 6km loops from Coach Paul's house, along the Bow river. Runners Florin and Lourdes joined us from Calgary. The day was cool to start but soon warmed up. I was feeling good and we were knocking off the kms. A number of hockey Mums and Dads joined us during the day. Hockey Mums 6, hockey Dads 1. The team raised $190 for Right To Play, thanks lads.
