The mercury on the thermometer keeps dropping. Today, Runner Andrew and myself headed out, all bundled up. Within 5 minutes the hose on my hydration pack had frozen. Note to self: Winterize the hydration pack. Our plan was to head down to Spray Lakes Sports Centre and check out the Team Taro Cup. It had been organized by Shojiro Okada and it was a thank you to the town of Cochrane. Shojiro's son Taro has been battling Leukemia and has made a great recovery. The day included a 3 on 3 hockey tournament, silent auction, BBQ lunch, raffle and, my favourite, bouncy castles. As Shojiro say "This is just for fun". So say we all.
After a coffee and cookie, Andrew and I headed up to the Cenotaph next to the Cochrane Legion. The area was packed with people and at 11.11am a minute of silence was held for the fallen soldiers. Representatives of the armed forces were there and a number of veterans were present. Other groups represented included the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Air Rescue, Scouts and Guides.
And finally, I was shocked to hear about the hardships endured by the passengers on the crippled five star cruise ship the Carnival Splendor. Apparently the soup was cold, so they had to serve vichyssoise. Next they were served bread, canned milk and Spam. They were lucky, when I was a lad I dreamed of having bread, canned milk and Spam!!!!
