The Verdict
Tales from the Couch
Today was the big day. I had my appointment with my family doctor, Dr. Hanlon at high noon and all would be revealed. I have been getting lots of advice and medical tips from fellow runners, triathletes and the local cheese shop. Several treatments have been put forward including Physiotherapy, Massage Therapy, Graston Technique and Cheese Therapy. I can not totally discount Cheese Therapy as Lindsey Vonn, USA, who is an advocate of this remedy, did win the Women's downhill at Whistler. The technique that I find most fascinating is Graston. Here is Wikipedia's explanation of it: Graston Technique is a therapeutic method for diagnosing and treating disorders of the skeletal muscles and related connective tissue. The method employs a collection of six stainless steel tools of particular shape and size, which are used by practitioners to palpate patients' bodies in order to detect and resolve adhesions in the muscles and tendons. It doesn't sound like much fun and according to my running buddies it's not.
I met with Dr. Hanlon and we started by discussing the results of my latest blood work. My Creatine Kinase levels are elevated, which indicates muscle breakdown. Dr Hanlon noted that this was to be expected based on the volume of running I've been doing. My Cholesterol levels are very low indicating that the muscles are chewing up all the fat that's thrown at them (my words not Dr. Hanlon's). Next was the results of the Echocardiogram. From all the tests the heart appears to be "Tickety-Boo" (medical term). Finally the bone scan.....................NOOOO, the results had not been faxed over. Court adjourned until Monday.
