At 7.15am this morning, I was sitting in my RX8 in the parking lot of Good Shepherd School, in Airdrie, Alberta. I wasn't happy. It had rained all night and had continued on the trip over from Cochrane. As I sat in my cosy car the rain hammered on the windshield and I could see the school's large, Canadian flag whipping in the wind. This would be a long day. I jumped out of the vehicle and scuttled over to the school entrance. I had to get going. I met Secretary Teresa and she showed me the staff room with fresh coffee brewing.. I had brought my full rain gear and this was the time to use it. I headed out and knocked off 5km. 9.00am, I went in and met Principal Don. 9.15am assembly time and a chat with the kids.
I had picked a 700m loop around the school and soccer fields. The only thing was to grind it out. It was too horrible for the students to come out so they waved to me from the classrooms. I went around and around, getting colder and colder. Time to add the Glad 3-in-1 rain jacket. That thing is a life saver. A couple of kids came out and told me it was pizza day. Things were looking up. I stopped at 12.45pm and chowed down a couple slices of cheese and pepperoni. The rain eased in the afternoon and a grade 3 class came out to join me. One young lad asked me a question I had never had before "How do you like being a boy?". I said it was pretty good and he agreed. I had to get in by 3.05pm for an afternoon assembly so I picked up the pace over the last 5km. All the kids were in the gym and I did a run round of high fives. The students had been fundraising and Principal Don presented me with a cheque for $500 for Right To Play. Well done kids.
