This is the last week of school so I've got three to visit. Today it's Sunalta School in Calgary. The weather forecast says "sunny with storms later". So, it should be an interesting day. I arrived at the school at 8.00am and met Teacher Deirdre. The school was built in 1913 and is a fabulous building. Lots of wood and huge arches. Outside, a massive mural has been painted along two walls, very colourful. I ran for a bit then chatted with the kids at the 9.10am assembly. I got a wonderful surprise when Sara and Dania, two grade 4 girls presented me with a cheque for $1,000 for Right To Play. During the year, the students had been collecting recyclable materials and in total had raised $1,800. Great effort kids!!!!!!
It was back out on the 1/2 km loop and the sun was intermitant. I chatted with loads of great kids but two, in particular, stood out. One lad, Kerry, was telling me about an ad he had seen on TV. It showed a boy assembling a gun and the caption read "There should be something else he's good at". He said it was from Right To Play. He had also seen one with a young child playing with cans in a garbage dump. He felt these kids deserved more. The other student was Grade 2er Benson. Benson was cracking jokes all the time as we ran around the loops and he told this classic. Question: What do runners eat to catch up to the next runner? Answer: Ketch up!!!!!! I only found out afterwards that Benson had come over from China at the age of 5. His English was excellent but what blew me away was his use of the language. These kids are amazing.
