Below are the Latest Marathon stats:
Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School is located in beautiful rolling farm land with a view of the mountains, to the west of Okotoks. It meant an 1 1/4 hr drive for me, as it's a good hike from Cochrane. I arrived at the school at 8.15am and was met by Teachers Helen and Clara. They teach grade 4 students and I chatted to the kids in their classroom, as they got ready to run. I told the teachers that I would do a test loop before the 9.00am assembly. They had laid out a course with flags and, as I completed 1 km, I met Runners Chuck and Wayne. I was a bit surprised as these fellows had organized the 50th marathon in Okotoks back in late March. They told me that today was an inter-school cross-country event with over 300 kids from 6 schools. At 9.00am I had an assembly with the students, then they all poured out to the start line, ready for the morning races.
I made sure I was off to the right, as each grade of boys and girls started their race and blew by me. The course was a 2km loop with a good portion through the trees on a single track trail. There was a little controversy with the grade 5 girls. A number of them had taken a short cut along a gravel path and the organizers were trying to decide what to do about it. The IOC guidelines on "Course Deviation" is very clear. Section 4 : Short Cutting, Sub Section 16 : Cross Country Item 7a : Grade 5-6. It states: "Any deviation from said course by any said registered participants will lead to disqualification. An appeal to said disqualification is permited with in 15 days of said occurance". Sorry girls it looks like a DQ and I don't mean Dairy Queen!!!
Big day, completed 5,036,024 steps by the end of today's marathon.
