Back to School: new books, pencils, erasers, ink wells, blotters and the smell of chalk on the chalk board. How things have changed. Now it's Smart Boards hooked up to the internet. But it's all good and I was just pleased to be back at my first school of the new school year. I arrived at West Dalhousie at 7.45am and met Principal Gord. He had arranged for an assembly at 11.00am so I had time to knock off a few klicks before I chatted with the kids. Weatherman Paul had promised me " cloudy and overcast skies" and I was a little apprehensive as I drove in the pouring rain to the school. However as I started to run the rain stopped and never returned. Nice one Weatherman Paul.

At 10.55am I entered the gym and waited as all the kids settled down. The school goes from Kindergarten to Grade 6 and has 365 students. While I was waiting I talked to two grade 6er's Riley and Cyli. They told me that they had been trained as road crossing monitors and it was their job to make sure that all the kids crossed the road safely. They had to talk about road safety to the whole school and they were a little nervous. Twenty minutes later I was back out on the field and plowing around the 500m loop. All through the afternoon kids joined for a loop or two. I was even given a chocolate chip cookie. Excellent!

Q. What did the clean dog say to the insect ?
A. Long time no flea!

Quote of the Day

"There are as many reasons for running as there are days in the year, years in my life.  But mostly I run because I am an animal and a child, an artist and a saint.  So, too, are you.  Find your own play, your own self-renewing compulsion, and you will become the person you are meant to be."

George Sheehan
